Each Second Chance Maths course runs for between 8 and 10 hours. No previous knowledge of maths beyond Grade 6 (Standard 4) is expected or required. The activities will be designed to maximise your engagement. Class size is usually between 12 and 25 people.

The aim is to get you to realise that you do have skills and abilities that you can use, and that there is no need for you to run away and hide! We will also work on seeing what mathematics really is, rather than the stuff you had to memorise at school. The content covered will be geometric in essence, since we will be re-connecting with our ability to visualise, but algebraic in practice as we will be aiming to capture the big picture.

A Comment from a student on the most recent course:

I felt privileged to have had the opportunity to attend your class. You motivated and excited your students so incredibly. You made us all feel special & worthwhile. Your insight & empathy was like a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed every moment of the five evenings. It was exceptional. So thank you once again for your generosity of spirit and for the confidence and joy of learning you gave me.

and more Comments from previous Second Chancers:

"Excellent – not being a Maths person and having dropped Maths as a subject at school, I dreaded this session. However, Chris was wonderful and made the session fun and simplified things (basic numbers) which I had no interest in because of my lack of understanding. My fears are still with me but Chris has proven to me that numbers need not be difficult".

"He was very motivating. Really achieved the objective of his session. He made me see numbers differently and I actually enjoy looking for patterns and visualising a system that makes sense".

"I think Chris Breen turned the assumed difficulty into structured simplicity. The idea of different people being able to apply different rules made a lot of sense when doing the practical application. The use of numbers also made a lot more sense by applying certain principles that we had discovered by practical application. I also realised that I had certain abilities I had never explored before. If someone had shown me this type of method with mathematics in my school days I would probably have been much better at Maths. I also learnt that the value of allowing others the opportunity to do things for themselves instead of taking it out of their hands is a manner of teaching and growth for the individual".
