I spent 26 years at UCT training mathematics teachers - and before that another 10 years as a classroom
mathematics teacher. I am passionate about learning and have come to Second Chance Maths through my work with students
training to be primary school teachers. I truly do not believe that anyone need fear mathematics although I accept that
there will be some who prefer not to embrace it. Our Second Chance Maths sessions are truly great fun (although many wouldn't
put the words 'fun' and 'mathematics' together in the same sentence. My teaching methods are not very traditional but have
been carefully developed over the years to match the topic. You'll probably best understand my views on mathematics by reading
the article you can access by clicking on "Rabbits and Moles" on the home page. These are some comments from previous participants which
I do not have to accept nor be held responsible for (especially the weird and wacky comment!) "Chris was very motivating. Really achieved the objective
of his session. He made me see numbers differently and I actually enjoy looking for patterns and visualising a system that
makes sense". "Chris is weird, wacky and off the wall!! Jokes aside, Chris Breen is with UCT's School of Education and
without boring you with the long (and impressive!) CV, I can tell you this guy is passionate about what he does, and
I have found his insight into 'how we interact' astonishing. With him you have to be prepared to have fun and not
to be lectured to. But that said - he is very serious about his topic and facilitates a session that hits home
and leaves you thinking long and hard after he is long gone".
"If I had had a Mathematics teacher like you I would have carried
on with my dream to become a medical doctor".
